Kampala, Uganda - LGBTI rights activist and academic researcher Dr Stella Nyanzi in court where she was released on bail on 20 May 2017, after more than a month in prison. Dr Nyanzi, an outspoken opponent of President Yoweri Museveni, had been imprisoned since her arrest on 7 April 2017, when she was charged with cyber harassment for referring to Museveni as 'a pair of buttocks', in a post she published online. However, Nyanzi's lawyers, led by Isaac Ssemakade, say this is an abuse of her rights since bail is her constitutional right. Ssemakade also says that the actions of the chief magistrate are denying his client the right to a fair and speedy trial.
